Merchant Carter

The funeral services of the late Merchant Carter at the residence, 275 Marion Avenue, yesterday afternoon, were attended by a large number of friends.  The services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Cantwell and the Rev. Dr. Hubbell.  The pall bearers were J.M. Bell, Edward Remy, N.S. Reed, M.B. Bushnell, Thomas Hildreth and James Marlow.

Merchant Carter died at 7 o'clock this morning at his residence, 175 Marion Avenue after an illness of a year, being confined to his bed most of the time.

Mr. Carter, a son of Robert Carter, was born in Springfield Township, Oct. 15, 1832.  In 1877 he was elected treasurer of Richland County and when he assumed the duties of the office he moved to Mansfield where he since resided continuously.  He was reelected county treasurer in 1879 and when he retired from the office he engaged in the lumber business.  He was president of the Carter-Man Lumber Company.

Mr. Carter married Miss Elizabeth U. Gass, Nov. 22, 1859.  There are five children:  Lulu M., May, Minnie, Charles S. and A. Ray Carter.

The deceased was a brother of Miller Carter, Jackson Carter and Isaac Carter, who reside in Springfield Township.

The funeral will occur from the residence Monday at 3 o'clock p.m.
